Arrival — Osaka (KIX) → Kii-Tanabe
Travel Day 🇯🇵 Wakayama

✈️ Getting There

Fly Osaka Kansai (KIX) → JR Kuroshio limited express down the coast to Kii-Tanabe (~1.5 hr). Tanabe is the pilgrimage gateway — visit the Kumano Travel community center office, grab the excellent free maps, and eat in Ajikoji, the izakaya alley.
💡 Notes: Send your travel luggage ahead to Katsuura by takkyubin (any konbini — arrives before you do). Morning bus Tanabe → Takijiri takes ~40 min; be on the first one (~7 AM).

Day1
Takijiri-oji → Takahara → Chikatsuyu → Kumano Hongu Taisha
Very Hard Full pilgrim stage ~40 km · 8–9 hr

Highlights

⚠ Notes: The classic 3–4 hiking stages in one run. Steep start to Takahara, then rolling forest ridges past dozens of oji (subsidiary shrines) through Chikatsuyu (lunch — last shops) and over the Hosshinmon-oji "gate of awakening" to Kumano Hongu Taisha, the grand shrine. Finish at Ōyunohara — the world's largest torii gate. Then 30 min over the Akagi-goe trail (or bus) to Yunomine Onsen: soak in Tsuboyu, the only UNESCO-listed hot spring you can bathe in, and boil eggs in the village spring.

🥤 Water/fuel: Vending machines at trail crossings (Japan!) + Chikatsuyu shops. Carry lunch from Tanabe.

Day2
Hongu → Kogumotori-goe → Ogumotori-goe → Nachi Falls — Finish!
Hard Nachi Taisha ~30 km · 7–8 hr

Highlights

🎉 Notes: The wilder half. Cross the two "cloud-passing" sections — Kogumotori-goe and Ogumotori-goe — moss-covered Edo stone paving through deep forest to the ridge at Echizen-tōge, then the long stone staircase drop to Kumano Nachi Taisha: vermilion pagoda framed against Nachi Falls, Japan's tallest single-drop waterfall. Finish down the ancient Daimon-zaka cedar avenue; bus to Kii-Katsuura for the harbor onsen and the best maguro (tuna) dinner of your life.

⚠ Care: Wet stone paving is glass-slick — the one place to hike, not run.

🚆 Getting home: JR Kuroshio from Kii-Katsuura back to Osaka (~3.5 hr), or continue to Ise/Nagoya up the coast.

Route Highlights

A thousand years of pilgrims, two days of running.

Day 1
Takahara ridge
The "village in the mist" — morning cloud sea over the Kii mountains from a ridge-top hamlet.
Day 1
Oji shrine rhythm
Dozens of small subsidiary shrines pace the trail — stamp book optional, highly addictive.
Day 1
Ōyunohara torii
The world's largest torii gate (34 m) rising from rice fields — the day's finish line.
Night 1
Yunomine Onsen
1,800-year-old spring; Tsuboyu is the only hot spring in the world on the UNESCO list you can sit in.
Day 2
Ogumotori-goe
Moss-covered Edo stone paving through primeval forest — the wildest, oldest-feeling stretch of the Kodo.
Day 2
Nachi Falls + pagoda
Japan's tallest waterfall (133 m) behind the vermilion Seiganto-ji pagoda — the most photographed finish in Japan.
Day 2
Daimon-zaka
A staircase avenue of 800-year-old cedars — the ceremonial last steps of the pilgrimage.

Extension

Kohechi
+3 days: Koyasan → Hongu, the hard quiet route

Terrain is TMB-forest, not alpine: constant 200–400 m climbs, roots and stone paving, zero exposure. The 40 km Day 1 is the real test — split at Chikatsuyu (minshuku village) for a 3-day version.

✈️ Access

In: Osaka KIX → JR Kuroshio → Kii-Tanabe (~1.5 hr) → morning bus to Takijiri (~40 min).

Out: Kii-Katsuura → JR Kuroshio → Osaka (~3.5 hr). Loop closes at the same airport.

⚠️ Route notes

🪨 Stone paving: beautiful, ancient, and lethal when wet — walk those sections.

🌡 Season: October–November (maple color) and March–May are prime. June is rainy season; July–August is 35°C + leeches + typhoon roulette.

🧭 Navigation: The best-signed trail in this collection — bilingual posts every few hundred meters. GPX barely needed but load it anyway.

🥤 Fuel: Vending machines at every road crossing; shops only in Chikatsuyu and at Hongu. Order bento breakfasts/lunches from your ryokan the night before.

💴 Money: Cash country — rural ryokan and buses often cash-only. 7-Eleven ATMs in Tanabe and Katsuura take foreign cards.

🏨 Booking system

Book through Kumano Travel — the official community reservation system (English, connects you to family-run inns with dinner/breakfast). Yunomine's popular ryokan (Adumaya, J-Hoppers etc.) sell out 2–3 months ahead in foliage season.
📅 Booking Timeline
Yunomine Onsen (night 1) is the bottleneck — a dozen small ryokan for the whole pilgrimage. 2–3 months ahead for Oct–Nov or Golden Week; other nights are flexible.
