Who Should Attempt
This is a multi-day adventure run, so you should be in shape and comfortable to run/hike 15-22 miles per day for 5-7 days straight. Thats pretty much the requirement since you can literally just hike the entire route each day and still able to make it to the next check point.
Date
Late July/Early September
July and August are the busiest time due to warm weather and holiday season in Europe, we should shoot for early August because weather should be good and the UTMB race is not until the end of the month to avoid runners destroying the trails.
Although the best dates might be the week before the UTMB event because August weather is much warmer than September, but it might be more expensive and more crowded as its still holiday season in Europe for the kids.
Location
Chamonix, France - Since this is a major resort and the most popular start/finish point, we should be able to stock up on food and other supplies here before we start the adventure.
Here is the entire TMB or the UTMB version. You can also download my Garmin route.
Flight
We will be flying in/out of Geneva, Switzerland.
Transportation
Here are some options we can take:
- Rental Car
- we can stash luggages in the trunk? Normal trunk fits 3 full-size body, so we should be ok! :P But please limit what you pack …
- Train/Shuttle/Bus
- we will need a place to stash the luggages. Train stations might offer daily storage lockers.
Luggage Storage
If we take public transportation from Geneva to Chamonix, we will need a place to store our luggages while we do the runs. Unless we have friends/family members coming along the trip and drive along the route to meet us at each check-points, we will be stashing all the luggages at the start and won’t need them until we get back.
TMB Shake Out Run
Shake-out run around Chamonix to explore the town.
- Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, Glaciorium, Montenvers Loop
- Distance: 8.3mi
- Elevation: 3,9996ft
Day by Day - Official Route
This option is the more low-key route because we will be staying at refuges and huts for most of the nights instead of hotels in ski resorts.
Notice! All Refuges/Huts offer half-board which will include dinner/breakfast, and the option to order picnic lunch sack for the following day.
