✈️ Getting There

Fly into Ljubljana (LJU) — the airport is already halfway there. Direct bus or shuttle (GoOpti works well) to Kranjska Gora in ~1–1.5 hr. Alternative gateways: Venice, Zagreb, or Klagenfurt, all 2–3 hr by shuttle.

Evening leg-stretcher: jog the 2 km to Lake Jasna — the mirror lake with the bronze ibex, framed by Prisojnik.

Hard Pokljuka 🇸🇮 Triglav NP ~39 km · 6–7 hr

Highlights

⚠ Notes: Biggest climbing day of the first half. Long ascent through the Pokljuka gorge onto the biathlon-famous spruce plateau at ~1,300 m — the deepest-forest running of the loop — then descend to Lake Bohinj, Bled's wilder, quieter sibling. Overnight in stone-built Stara Fužina at the lake's east end. Evening swim mandatory.

Highlights

⭐ Notes: Shorter day to absorb Day 3. Lakeshore path at dawn, through Bohinjska Bistrica (last supermarket until Tolmin), then the climb over the grassy Soriška planina saddle and steep drop into the narrow Baška grapa valley to the railway village of Podbrdo — the quietest, least-touristed corner of the loop.

Highlights

💡 Notes: Ridge-and-village running high above the Bača valley, then the drop to Most na Soči where you meet the impossibly emerald Soča for the first time. Short hop upstream to Tolmin. If legs allow, evening visit to the Tolmin gorges — the lowest and warmest entry point of Triglav NP (+4 km).

Day6
Tolmin → Kobarid → Bovec
Hard Soča gorges 🇸🇮 Soča valley ~41 km · 6–7 hr

Highlights

⭐ Notes: The Soča day — trail hugs the river's turquoise pools and suspension bridges most of the way. Kobarid (Caporetto of Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms) has the best WWI museum in the Alps — worth 45 min even mid-run. Detour to Kozjak waterfall (+2 km, do it). Approach Bovec under the Boka waterfall, Slovenia's tallest.

🍽 Kobarid bonus: the town is Slovenia's unlikely food capital — Hiša Franko (world's-best-restaurant lists) lives here. Book months ahead or settle for excellent pizza.

Highlights

⚠ Notes: Longest day, deepest mountains. Up the Koritnica valley under the Mangart massif to Log pod Mangartom, then over the shoulder and back into the upper Soča — following the river to its karst spring source (short chained scramble to the pool) and into the Trenta valley, the loneliest and most alpine valley of the loop. Highlights

🎉 Notes: Victory day over the roof of the trail. Climb out of Trenta on the old military mule track — cutting the 50 hairpins of the road — to Vršič, the highest pass in Slovenia and the only true alpine crossing of the Juliana. Pass the WWI Russian Chapel on the long descent, roll past Lake Jasna, and close the loop in Kranjska Gora. Celebration štruklji and beer.

Route Highlights

Around Triglav, not over it — the point is the valleys.

Day 1
Triglav north face
The 1,000 m wall from the Vrata valley — Slovenia's national mountain at its most dramatic angle.
Day 2
Lake Bled
Island church, cliff castle, cream cake. The postcard — and you ran here.
Day 3
Pokljuka plateau
Kilometres of rolling spruce-forest track at 1,300 m — biathlon country, the fastest running of the loop.
Day 3
Lake Bohinj
Bled without the crowds — glacial lake under 2,000 m walls. Evening swim from Stara Fužina.
Day 5
First sight of the Soča
The river's emerald color looks photoshopped in person. It isn't.
Day 6
Kobarid
Hemingway's Caporetto — the best WWI museum in the Alps and, oddly, Slovenia's food capital.
Day 6
Kozjak waterfall
A ribbon of water in a moss-domed amphitheater cave. Two km off-route, unmissable.
Day 6
Boka waterfall
106 m straight out of a cliff face — Slovenia's biggest, right above the trail into Bovec.
Day 7
Soča source
The whole emerald river starts as a karst spring in a cave pool. Short chained scramble to look in.
Day 7
Trenta valley
The loneliest valley in the Julian Alps — hay barns, limestone giants, and almost nobody.
Day 8
Vršič Pass
Highest point of the trail via the old military mule track — WWI Russian Chapel on the way down.
Day 8
Lake Jasna finish
Close the 280 km loop at the mirror lake with the bronze ibex. Štruklji and Union beer in town.

Route Days / Nights ~Distance ~Daily avg
Tour du Mont Blanc6 / 5~170 km~28 km
Alta Via 26 / 5~160 km~27 km
Via Alpina 1 (CH)10 / 9~390 km~39 km
Peaks of the Balkans (planned)6 / 5~179 km~30 km
Juliana Trail (this plan)8 / 7~280 km~35 km

Terrain sits between TMB and Via Alpina CH: mostly forest track, cycle path, and village singletrack with only one alpine pass. 35 km/day here feels like 28 on the TMB — expect to negative-split the trip.

✈️ Access

In/out: Ljubljana (LJU) → Kranjska Gora, ~1–1.5 hr. GoOpti shared shuttles are the local standard; public bus via Jesenice also works. Loop format = one hotel holds your travel luggage.

Mid-route bail-outs: Bohinj railway (Podbrdo–Most na Soči–Bohinjska Bistrica, the historic tunnel line) and frequent buses in the Soča valley — the loop is easy to shorten or resume anywhere.

⚠️ Route notes

🏃 Terrain: ~80% runnable — forest roads, riverside paths, old military tracks. Rockiest bits: Baška grapa descents and the Vršič mule track.

🌡 Heat: Soča valley days (5–7) sit at 200–500 m and cook in July–Aug — start at dawn, swim at lunch. Consider June or September for the whole loop.

🧭 Navigation: Waymarked (green Juliana logo) but town exits can be fiddly — keep the official GPX on watch + GAIA.

💧 Water: Village fountains everywhere; carry 1 L. The Soča itself is drinkable-clean upstream but filter to be safe.

🎪 Events: Tolmin hosts big music festivals (MetalDays etc.) in July — beds vanish those weeks, check dates.

💶 Money

Cheapest big route in the Alps: rooms €50–90, dinner €12–20, coffee €1.50. Cards everywhere, ATMs in every overnight town. Budget €80–110/day all-in.
