Day0
Arrival — Tirana → Shkodër → Theth
Travel Day 🇦🇱 Albania Rest · Permit check · Early dinner

✈️ Getting There

Fly into Tirana (TIA). Then:

1. Tirana → Shkodër — bus/furgon from the North & South Bus Terminal, ~2 hr, ~€4. Or pre-book a direct transfer.
2. Shkodër → Theth — shared minibus (furgon) or 4x4, ~2.5–3 hr on the (now mostly paved) mountain road, ~€10. Morning departures around 7 AM from Shkodër center — if landing late, overnight in Shkodër and go up next morning.

Alternative: Fly Podgorica (TGD, Montenegro) and transfer via Gusinje — shorter drive but you'd need to restructure the loop to start at Vusanje/Plav.

🏠 Theth Lodging

Guesthouse / Bujtina in Theth village Booking.com →
Theth has dozens of family-run guesthouses (bujtina) with half-board — hearty home cooking, ~€25–40/night. Book one near the church (village center) so Day 1 starts on the trail. Popular picks: Bujtina Polia, Villa Gjeçaj, Guesthouse Rupa.
💡 Notes: Confirm your cross-border permit paperwork is in order (see Permits tab — arranged 2+ weeks before). Withdraw cash in Shkodër — no ATMs on the route until Plav (Day 4). Albania uses Lek, Kosovo and Montenegro use EUR; guesthouses along the trail accept EUR everywhere. Visit the Theth church and grab an early dinner — Day 1 is the biggest day of the trip.

Day1
Theth → Valbona Pass → Valbona → Çerem
Very Hard Valbona Pass 🇦🇱 Albania ~40 km · 8–10 hr

Highlights

⚠ Notes: Biggest day of the loop — two stages merged. Climb from Theth over Valbona Pass (the most famous view in the Albanian Alps), descend to Valbona village for a café/lunch stop, then continue up-valley through Rragam and over to Çerem. Much of the Valbona→Çerem leg follows a dirt road along the river — runnable, save your legs on it. Water: fountains in Theth, Valbona, and springs marked en route. Start at first light.

🍽 Lunch: Café/restaurants at Valbona village (~17 km in) — last real resupply until Plav on Day 4.

Çerem → Dobërdol → Trekufiri → Milishevc
Hard Triple Border 🇦🇱→🇽🇰 Albania → Kosovo ~33 km · 7–9 hr

Highlights

🛂 Notes: Climb to Dobërdol, a roadless summer shepherd settlement (stânas and turf-roofed huts). From there, tag Trekufiri — stand in Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro at once. Cross into Kosovo (permit checkpoint area — carry passport + permit papers) and follow the grassy high route to Milishevc. Long exposed ridgeline — start early if storms forecast.

Highlights

💡 Notes: Rolling Kosovo day through pine forest and pasture. Reka e Allagës makes a great lunch stop — the village guesthouses (Ariu Guesthouse is the classic) serve big farm lunches. Optional out-and-back to Hajla peak on the Montenegro border ridge if legs and weather allow (+~2 hr, panoramic). Finish at Liqenat near Kuqishtë.

Highlights

🛂 Notes: Cross into Montenegro (second border — permit + passport). Pass Hridsko Lake, a glacial lake in Prokletije National Park considered sacred in local lore — swim if you dare. Drop through Babino Polje and roll down to Plav, the only real town on the route: ATMs, pharmacy, shops, restaurants, mosques and lakefront. Resupply everything here.

🍽 Dinner: Plav has proper restaurants — go for the local grilled trout from the lake.

Route via the hills above Lake Plav, then through Gusinje (coffee stop, last shops) past the crystal-clear Ali Pasha Springs to Vusanje, a quiet village at the mouth of the Ropojana valley under the jagged Karanfili towers. Afternoon optional: jog into Grebaje valley for the classic Karanfili amphitheater view (+6 km round trip).

Route Highlights

The moments that make the Accursed Mountains unforgettable.

Day 1
Valbona Pass (1,812 m)
The signature view of the Albanian Alps — limestone walls dropping into two green valleys. Busy with hikers by mid-morning; you'll be over it before the crowds.
Day 2
Dobërdol
Roadless summer shepherd settlement at 1,750 m — turf-roofed huts, sheep bells, and zero infrastructure. Feels like stepping back 200 years.
Day 2
Trekufiri (2,366 m)
The triple-border summit — Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro meet at the cairn. Three countries in one stride.
Day 3
Hajla (2,403 m) — optional
Out-and-back summit on the Kosovo–Montenegro border ridge with a huge drop off the north face. Add it if the legs say yes.
Day 3
Reka e Allagës lunch
Village guesthouses serve enormous farm lunches — flija, byrek, mountain tea, honey. The food memory of the trip.
Day 4
Hridsko Lake (1,970 m)
Sacred glacial lake hidden in pine and granite in Prokletije National Park. Locals say throwing jewelry in brings luck — a swim is cheaper.
Day 4
Plav town
The only town on the loop — lakefront, minarets, ATMs, grilled trout. Civilization tastes better after four days of ridgelines.
Day 5
Ali Pasha Springs
Ice-clear karst springs bubbling out of the base of the Prokletije near Gusinje. Refill bottles at the source.
Day 5
Karanfili walls
The jagged "carnation" towers above Grebaje valley — Montenegro's most alpine skyline. Optional evening jog to the viewpoint.
Day 6
Ropojana valley
Glacier-carved trench running dead-straight toward Maja Jezercë, highest peak of the Dinaric Alps. Wild, silent, spectacular.
Day 6
Peja Pass (1,710 m)
Final pass of the loop, back into Albania between limestone giants. All downhill to the finish from here.
Day 6
Blue Eye of Theth
Impossibly turquoise plunge pool below a waterfall — the finish-line swim you earned six days ago.

Same shape as your TMB run — but expect slower terrain: fainter trails, more navigation, rougher footing. Budget TMB effort + 15–20% time.

⚠️ Cross-border permits are mandatory. The route crosses Albania↔Kosovo↔Montenegro at unmanned mountain borders. Each crossing requires advance police notification in all three countries. Apply at least 2 weeks before (some agencies say 15 working days). Carry printed permit + passport at all times — patrols do check.

How to get permits

Balkan Natural Adventure
Kosovo-based agency (Pejë). Handles the full 3-country permit paperwork for a fee (~€10–20/person), plus optional luggage transfer and guesthouse booking.
Zbulo! Discover Albania
Albania-based operator, co-developers of the route. Permit service, GPS tracks, and self-guided packages including guesthouse bookings.

Official route site — stage descriptions, GPX downloads, and permit information.

Logistics notes

💶 Money: Bring enough EUR cash for the whole trail — guesthouses, food, transfers. Only reliable ATM on-route is in Plav (Day 4). Albania officially uses Lek but trail guesthouses take EUR.

📶 Connectivity: Patchy. Get an eSIM with EU roaming + Albania coverage; Kosovo/Montenegro segments often have zero signal. Download offline maps before Day 0.

🧭 Navigation: Waymarking (white-red-white) is decent but young — fainter than TMB. Carry the GPX on GAIA/watch. Fog on the Kosovo ridges is the main hazard.

🐕 Sheepdogs: Livestock guardian dogs around Dobërdol and Kosovo pastures. Stop running, walk wide around flocks, pick up a stone if needed — they back off.

💧 Water: Springs and fountains are frequent but carry capacity for 2–3 hr on the high ridgelines (Day 2 and Day 4 especially).
📅 Booking Timeline
Guesthouses are small (4–15 beds) but far less contested than TMB refuges. 1–3 months ahead is plenty for July–August; the permit (2+ weeks) is the real deadline. Most trail guesthouses have no online booking — reserve via WhatsApp/phone, or let the permit agency book the whole chain for a small fee (recommended — they confirm in local language).
